Analysis of Q Contents Page

Flush Left: The flush left column is used on this content page to align all of the pictures and this is used to good effect because it doesn't make the magazine look clunky, the magazine design looks professional and is aesthetically pleasing.
Flush Right: Similar to the flush left column the flush right column looks just as aesthetically pleasing as the flush left column, it is smaller than the flush left column but the information is clunky and looks very professional.
Negative Space: Although this is called negative space i believe that it has been used and has given a positive effect, there is a lot of negative space on this page but it fits in with the house style of the magazine, throughout the whole magazine there are lots of negative space and it fits in really well with the colour scheme, it gives the magazine a gritty feel.
Kicker: The name of every act on the contents page the font has purposely been made drastically bigger and bolder, this is because this makes the acts stand out to the reader and the acts on the contents page vary quite a bit which is a good thing because it will attract a wider audience.

Analysis of Q Front Cover

·         feature article photograph: it is a picture of Oasis member Liam Gallagher, the reason why this is the first thing I noticed is because it stands out, the reason it stands out because they have made it so the picture is in front of the text, therefore, this makes the picture really stand out and also it is a good picture to use as Oasis are a very popular band and they will attract a lot of attention from people who like rock music.
·         Demographic: The demographic of this magazine is most likely to be late teens to an older age because some of the bands are quite old and they may not appeal to a younger variety. The magazine is also aimed at both genders as both genders enjoy the rock genre.
·         Plug: The information shown on the front of the magazine stands out the reader because the colours that have been used really brings the words to attention, they seem to be going with a red, white and black colour scheme which seems to be really effective, I believe that this colour scheme is used because it gives a gritty, rock feel to the magazine and it would really appeal to rock fans as rock is generally associated with danger and violence just like the colour red. The text is bold and the acts that are being presented on the front of the magazine are in red which matches the colour of the logo.
·         Masthead: The masthead is in the top right of the magazine which is where generally other magazines put theirs. The masthead on this magazine stands out because of the colours that have been used for it, it is very simple as it is just a “Q” inside of a red square but it seems so effective especially on this magazine because of the colour contrast, it goes really well with the white background on the magazine and also the red square is the same colour as all the plug titles.
d     Puff: They put the name of the big band in the magazine in bold to attract more attention because more people are going to then see it as it stands out because it is bigger and bolder than all of the other content on the front cover. Also the phrase " I went home with a shotgun" is a perculiar story so it is going to attract peoples attention as it is not something that you hear everyday, its going to make people want to read it. They also put that phrase in red to try and make it stand out more and because it is the main headline the font size is bigger which makes it stand out to the readers,

Analysis of Q Double Page Spread

Headline: The headline of this article has a page of its own so it makes it really stand out and you're going to notice it as it is big, bold and in your face. the headline also links to the picture on the other page because it says "DON'T LOOK DOWN" and then on the other page it has a picture of Sam Smith looking down from the railings so that is used to make the headline stand out even more. Also in the headline the "O" in "DON'T" is lowered down which also links in with what the headline says.
Flush Right: The flush right column is aligned to the right of the right page and it makes the article look very professional and organised because the article looks neat and not clunky and all over the place.
Negative Space: There is quite a bit of white space on the second page of the double page spread, they use it to give a positive effect thought because it fits in with the whole house style of the magazine.

Analysis of NME Double Page Spread

Pull-out Quote: The pull out quote has been made to stand out through the middle of the two pages, this is effective because it summarizes what the whole interview is about. The demographic of this is probably aimed at the male gender because the blocks of writing and the colours are quite simplistic, the black and white gives it a more masculine look which could also suggest that this is aimed at a male gender group. Also the font used is quite basic which is why it would be aimed at a more masculine group of people because the more feminine people would like different fonts and different colours.
Flush right column: The flush right column has been laid out very simplistically and has big bold words in it, this again shows the masculinity that the article is trying to put across, this article is definitely not for feminine people and is probably more aimed at the male demographic.
Standfirst: The standfirst is shown on the left side of this double page spread and it is again very simple, no fancy fonts or colours it is very bold and clear which makes it easier to understand for the male demographic, it is very straight to the point and does not go on about rubbish, it tells you exactly what this article will involve and you understand after the first read.

Analysis NME Contents Page

Flush Left Column: The flush left column on this contents page is used to align the "regulars" of this magazine, I think this is a really good thing to do because if they use that same layout for every magazine the avid reader would always know where to go to find an act that are usually in this magazine, it makes the look of the magazine very professional.
Flush Right Column: The flush right column on this magazine because it is used to show the entire band list that features in this magazine, it makes the page look incredibly professional and it all looks very neat and tidy which is a good thing because it makes it easier for people to read it.
Negative Space: The negative space that is on this contents page looks good because of the colours that have been used, it kind of reminds me of a newspaper it has that black and white type of feel to it, which is helped by the negative space.
Standfirst: The headings are the names of different acts and they are then followed by a little bit of a description telling you what to expect from the article. This is really effective because the description under each headline will pull in a selected audience that like that audience, it gives the readers more variation.

Analysis of NME Front Cover

Masthead: The masthead for this front cover really jumps out at you because the rest of the front cover is quite a dull colour but the masthead is a bright red rectangle with big white bold letters in, it was the first thing that really jumped out at me because of the contrast in colours.
Feature Article Photograph: The picture on the front cover of this magazine is a picture of Johnny Marr and  this will appeal to lots of people because he is such a big star, the picture links in with the cover lines, it says "how sex, alcohol and paranoia shaped his epic new album" this is then supported by what looks like needles or wires around his head, its almost as if he sacrificed his life to make this new album which is going to make people desperate to read it.
Demographic:  The demographic of this album i would say is probably aimed at the age group of late teens and adults this is because rock and that kind of genre is quite mature and probable more suitable for an older age group, the magazine also has a dark feel to it therefore young children wont find it appealing, the gender would be both because both genders are into this genre of music.
Plug: The colours that have been used on the front cover for the plugs are really effective because the background of the magazine is really dark so to put big bold white words onto the black background really makes the words jump out at you and you really notice them.
Puff: On the front cover of this magazine they have put the big stories and big acts that feature in this magazine in bold and this will boost the magazines reputation because people are going to buy it for the big names.

Analysis of Mojo Front Cover

Masthead: The masthead is infont of all of the information that is on the front cover of this magazine, that makes it really stand out, I think that the masthead of this magazine is more aimed towards a female demographic as it comes across as very feminine, I believe that the font used and the colour scheme that they have gone for has given the magazine a feminine feel.
Cover lines: The cover lines for the magazine again come across as very feminine and the way the fonts and colours have been used supports this statement, the light blue and pink gives the magazine a feminine feel, I do believe that this magazine would attract more female music fans rather than male music fans.
Feature article photograph: The photograph on the front of this magazine is a female, this once again supports the points that I made previously about the magazine coming across as very feminine, they use a white flare effect that would again appeal more to a femal demographic

Analysis of Mojo Double Page Spread

Analysis of Mojo Contents Page

Flush Right Column: The flush right column on this contents page is about the only thing on the page. It is very basic and would probably be more suited towards a male demographic, this is because of the simplistic nature of the column and the whole page.

Feature Article Photo: There is only one photo on this contents page which doesn't really follow convention, they have used an influential male as the only picture which again probably supports the point that this magazine is more towards a male demographic.

Masthead: The word "Contents" is placed at the top of the page and no fancy font is used, it is just really basic and simple which once again supports the point that this page at least is aimed more at the male demographic

Draft photo

This is the draft photo I used for my draft front cover, i needed to change it because there wasn't direct eye contact with the camera and the photo doesn't look to professional anyway, therefore, this became my draft photo and I ended up improving my actual front cover by using this as a bad example
This is me sorting out the lighting for the draft photo that I took, I needed to get the light directly on his face so i changed it.
